It recently came to the attention of the Peoria Police Department that some alarm and security companies are placing flyers on homes in Peoria, indicating property crimes are on the rise and homeowners should take action to protect their homes by getting alarm and security systems. The flyer continues on with the sales pitch to sell alarm and security services. While the Peoria Police Department would never discourage a homeowner from getting an alarm or security service, it is important to know the facts. Peoria's property crime rate is not on the rise. Peoria’s property crime rate is actually down again this year. In 2008, there were 1,199 property crimes; that number dropped to 1,127 crimes in 2009. This is a decrease of 6.2%. All indicators show that we will experience a continual decline in 2010. In addition to a security service, which does offer another layer of protection, there are many other ways to protect your home, including:
-good

August 3, 2010 Zero Tolerance!!! Peoria Police Announce School Zone Traffic Enforcement School starts Monday, August 9th. Are you ready for school to start? The Peoria Police Department takes a “zero tolerance” stance on speeding in school zones. 15 MPH means 15 MPH. The first day of school is just a week away and the Peoria Police Department is gearing up with a special plan to address traffic safety around our schools. In addition to a public education campaign designed to remind motorists of the hazards of driving too quickly through school zones and the inherent dangers of driving around school buses when they are loading and unloading children, officers will be beefing up enforcement in a new way. The physical presence of police officers is often required to garner compliance with traffic laws from motorist. However, departments don’t have the resources to put police officers at every school. To address this, Peoria police officers in plain clothes will join up with school crossing guards at many of the Peoria schools and handheld RADAR units will be used from this position to identify drivers who are not adhering to the mandatory 15 MPH speed through school zones. The officers will then radio the vehicle information and speed to other officers in the area and the traffic enforcement stop will be made. 15 means 15 and the police department will have zero tolerance for speeding in these areas. Working in partnership with the Peoria Unified School District, the Peoria Police Department will continue having uniformed police officers ride on school buses to observe violations of our state law that requires drivers to stop for school buses that are loading or unloading children. Once again, when a driver is observed failing to stop of the “Stop Arm” extended and lights flashing the officer on the bus will radio the vehicle information to other officers in the area. This enforcement campaign is being funded by a grant from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety. To save you from being stopped by the Peoria Police Department while our kids are heading back to school, please keep in mind the following: 1. 15 means 15, there is NO allowance over the speed limit and just because you don’t see kids in the area doesn’t mean you can ignore the 15 MPH zone. 2. No Passing in a school zone means NO passing or over taking another vehicle while in a school zone, no matter how slow they are going. This is because kids are so small, they can’t be seen easily and a vehicle may be slowing for a child you can’t see. 3. Stop when the crossing guard has the stop sign out. 4. Kids are very excited at the start of school so please slow down in neighborhoods and around schools. 5. Remember FINES are doubled if signs are up.

August 2, 2010 Thank you to all the people who generously donate items to the library. In order to accommodate the donations, we would appreciate it if you followed these guidelines:
Keep in mind that we only have so much room and so few people to keep the library organized. Your cooperation is appreciated! Please don’t file books that are being returned. Place them in the designated boxes for the library staff to handle. Do not remove bookends from the library. They are purchased by the library and needed to keep the shelves organized. Please return the ones that have been borrowed. Finally, we are looking for more volunteers to help with the library responsibilities. Any amount of time would be appreciated. The Peoria Police Department is seeking
volunteers who are interested in assisting with clerical duties.
This would include some data entry on the computer as well as filing
and preparing mailers. Volunteers must be available on weekdays, no
weekends, between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. As a
volunteer you are only required to work eight hours a month, so even
if you are interested in just a few hours each week, that would be
great!
